Dr. Frédéric Suffert is plant disease epidemiologist at INRAE, the French National Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment. He holds an engineering diploma in agronomy specialized in Crop Protection and a PhD in plant pathology. From 2000 to 2007 he worked at INRAE Rennes on the epidemiology of soil-borne diseases. He currently works at INRAE Versailles-Grignon and heads the group Evolutionary Epidemiology of Wheat Fungal Pathogens in the BIOGER research unit. He supervises research on epidemiology of Septoria tritici blotch of wheat (Zymoseptoria tritici): processes driving the disease development, sexual reproduction (ecology of residues as source of primary inoculum), and adaptative dynamics of pathogen populations in heterogeneous environments (host resistance deployed in cultivar mixtures and temperature, addressing the potential impact of seasonality). He also regularly addresses issues of crop biosecurity and plant health risk analysis for governmental agencies. He is general secretary of the French Phytopathological Society (SFP) since 2016.
